Former UFC heavyweight championship challenger, Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello, delivered a thunderous, 43 second knockout on octagon legend David “Tank” Abbott during a historic first-ever mixed martial arts fight card at Fresno, California’s Save Mart Center on Friday, October 7th. Lightweight sensation, Josh “The Punk” Thomson, meanwhile, continued his rise through the sport’s 155 pound division by submitting knockout artist, Duane “Bang” Ludwig, inside of two rounds during a featured contest on the Strikeforce promoted card that was presented by BodogFight.
As expected, Abbott charged out of the gates at the sound of the opening bell. He backed the Texas native against the cage, but it was to no avail as Buentello unloaded a flurry of punches and opened a cut outside of Abbott’s left eye.
Abbott continued to move forward and trade blows with the seasoned kickboxer until Buentello caught him with a hard right hand that put Abbott on the mat. Buentello pursued the downed and hurt Abbott, but referee Marcos Rosales quickly pulled Buentello away and stopped the action.
From the outset of the highly anticipated matchup between the two 28-year-old stars, Ludwig was placed on the defensive as an aggressive Thomson shot and took “Bang” to the canvas. Ludwig worked well from his guard, frustrating Thomson as the latter tried to hammer out a quick victory.
Ludwig made it back to his feet, but gave up his back to Thomson and was forced to defend from the guard again. After turning back into Thomson, Ludwig successfully returned to his feet a second time.
A Thomson slip allowed Ludwig to take back-control over his opponent and attempt to close out the fight with a rear naked choke. Thomson answered Ludwig’s effort by turning back into Bang before the round came to a close.
After the opening bell sounded for the second round, Thomson took the fight to the mat and unloaded shots from the top position. Endeavoring to get back to his feet, Ludwig sat up and Thomson utilized the opportunity to secure a guillotine choke. Thomson sat back into the guard position to tighten the hold before Ludwig tapped at the 4:36 mark of the round.
