The weather is getting nicer and life just keeps getting busier and busier. The world of mixed martial arts is no different. 2007 is already a historical year and could be the year that is remembered as the year that changed everything. Already 2007 has provided many momentous events and it is only March. Pride being sold to the Fertitta brothers could end up being the biggest move in mixed martial arts history, but only time will tell. The alliances among Strikeforce, K-1, Cage Rage, and Pro Elite that are popping up because of the Feritta’s purchase will also provide great bouts for the fans and further push the sport to new heights.
ICON SPORT is one of the few major promotions that has not aligned themselves with anyone yet, and they insist that they will keep a neutral position. The Hawaiian based promotion has been putting on great cards for years and their product keeps getting better and better. On Saturday, ICON SPORT puts on a solid card featuring Jason "Mayhem" Miller, Renato Verissimo, and a main event of middleweight champion Frank Trigg defending his title against Robbie Lawler.
Middleweight Championship Bout: Frank Trigg (Champion) vs. Robbie Lawler (Challenger)
Newly crowned ICON SPORT middleweight Frank Trigg is coming off a big win over Pride’s welterweight Grand Prix champion Kazuo Misaki (decision). Trigg has rejuvenated his career at 185 pounds and is currently 2-0 when fighting in the weight class. His dominate tko victory over Jason "Mayhem" Miller to win the title was at the time viewed as an upset, but Trigg’s recent performance is proving that it was no fluke.
Robbie Lawler is the ICON SPORT former middleweight champ before he lost the belt to Jason "Mayhem" Miller by arm triangle back in September. Since losing to "Mayhem", Lawler is 2-0 with wins over Joey Villasenor (ko by flying knee) and Eduardo Pamplona (tko). Lawler is a long time member of the Miletich camp and at one time was a poster boy of the UFC. Lawler is a deadly striker and likes to brawl. His explosive style and powerful hands gives him the ability to put people to sleep with one punch.
Lawler has looked very good in his last two fights. His flying knee knockout of Joey Villasenor was a late nominee for flying knee knockout of 2006. Trigg has been on fire recently and his cocky attitude is now being backed up by what he is doing in the ring. His dominantly violent victory over Jason Miller was one of the most impressive performances of 2006.
My pick in Trigg in this fight by ground and pound in round three. This fight should be action packed, but Trigg’s wrestling skills will win him this fight.
